Maria Montessori (1870-1952) envisioned and helped to realize a new approach to education.
Alexander Montessori School follows her philosophy. Our task is to aid children in their work of self-creation, to help them become independent learners and thinkers.
Beverley and Jim McGhee wanted a different kind of school for their children. They founded Alexander Montessori School in 1963. They affected the future, not only for their own children, but also for many children and families to come.
Alexander Montessori School offers its programs at four distinctive locations: Preschool (ages 3-6) at the Red Road Campus across from the University of Miami; Toddler and Preschool (ages 2-6) at the Old Cutler Road Campus, designed from the ground up as a model of Dr. Montessori's vision of the Children's House environment; Toddler and Preschool (ages 1½-6) at the Palmetto Bay Campus across from the Palmetto Bay Village Center; and Elementary (ages 6-12, Grades 1-6) at the six-acre Ludlam Road Campus.
When the School ceIebrated its 40th Anniversary, a major 18,000 sq. ft. building addition to the Elementary Campus was completed. It included eight Lower School Elementary environments, specifically designed for Montessori Elementary, and an 8000 sq. ft. multipurpose hall, the Maria Montessori Center. New tennis courts, athletic fields, landscaping, and a state-of-the-art Computer Lab were completed as well. Most recently, the school launched an expansion of its Montessori Toddler Program and Early Childhood Education Program with the addition of the lush Palmetto Bay Campus. This beautiful location makes a perfect "home away from home" for our youngest students.
Alexander Montessori School continues to be a partnership of innumerable people. This is a place where personal and shared visions evolve, for the children, for the School, for the community, and for the future. The School honors the contributions of the children, families, Faculty, and Staff who have helped make Alexander Montessori School such a unique institution.
Alexander Montessori School is named in honor of Henry and Alice Alexander, the parents of Beverley Alexander McGhee.
